Increase your twitter followers: engage, share, chat

Twitter has expanded far beyond people tweeting about what they had for breakfast, or what they plan on doing for lunch. This tool can be used for purposes such as job search, exercise advice, motivation, and more. There is a great amount of information being shared that can be obtained if you know how to find it. One of the challenges I have found on twitter is locating who I should follow. There are three ways I locate people to follow.
Engage:
1. Find people in your geographic area and engage them in a conversation. There are a number of ways of finding these people besides the twitter search. One way is by attending networking groups and events. Meeting people in-person is one way to start a relationship. Having a discussion where you are able to share ideas and thoughts is one way to build a friendship. Showing interest in another person is a good way to build rapport. When you find out that you both are participants on twitter, you may decide to follow each other.
2. Tweetups are another way to find local people who you can engage in conversation. The unique feature about tweetups is that unlike meeting people at networking events and groups, where you don’t know for sure if they are active on twitter, attending a tweetup means the people there are either interested in twitter, or are already using twitter. Again, having a conversation with someone may help you decide if you should follow them.
The first two ways to increase your followers is using the idea that to gain a follower you have to be a follower. Although choosing to follow someone, does not necessarily mean that they will choose to follow you back, if you meet someone in person and have a worthwhile conversation about common interests, it increases the chances they will follow you if you follow them.

3. If you share good and useful content, whether it is on your blog, or sharing an article from someone else’s blog, a beneficial event or some other kind of information, your followers may choose to retweet your tweet to the people that follow them. As a result, you may gain new followers that way if the additional people determine that the information you share is useful to them in some way.
Chat:
4. There are numerous chats on twitter. A chat is when people who are interested in a particular topic get together on twitter and share ideas, advice, questions, and information. Chats usually take place on regular days at regular times. Chats usually have one or more moderators who help the participants stay on the topic of the question. The unique feature of chats is that the people who participate can be from all over the world. There are far too many chat groups to list here, but some of the chat groups I have participated in are the #JobHuntChat, #BlogChat, #HFChat, and #CareerChat. Providing useful information or advice or asking a good question is a key to gaining knowledge in a chat. If the people in the chat like the information you are sharing they may choose to follow you.
Engage, share, chat are three ways to gain more followers.
