| I use images the majority of the time and currently I'm participating in the Photo Journal Challenge so one image is going up daily regardless. They're not necessarily 'essential', but they can add to your blog posts, so I think they're pretty useful. |

I agree with Jessi, there not essential for all blogs, but it depends on what you are writing about. All of my posts contain software reviews, so I allways include a SMALL screen capture of the program being reviewed. But I read quite a few blogs that almost never contain an image.

I like to add them in for the visual factor even if its just a small one at the top. i usually try and get one all my major posts i make because it just makes them more noticeable and its a way for the reader to find out what the topics about before they decide to read it.
