I'm thinking of switching.

Which do you prefer...wordpress or blogger?

What are positive and negatives for each if you can list them.

I use Wordpress published on my own domain. I'm hosted with visionthishosting.com ( Shawn's business)

I think that people like Blogger for it's simplicity. If you are knew to blogging then Blogger might be the way to go.

There are advantages to using Wordpress hosted on your own domain though. It gives you complete control over your blog. Wordpress has a lot of plugins and themes.

If you use Wordpress hosted on their domain than it is a bit limited.

I started out on Blogger then moved to Wordpress. Although there were a few things I missed about blogger at first I quickly got over it and now I love Wordpress.

Nothing beats Wordpress hosted on your own domain. You can do practically whatever you want with it.
Wordpress.com is very limited, however. You have to pay to be able to edit your CSS. So I think Blogger would be better for someone who wants to be able to edit their CSS for free. I don't think you can post by email on Wordpress.com, either. Wordpress.com is good if you just want to post and maybe don't know CSS. Blogger is a lot less limited and gives you a lot more control over your blog.
The best thing I've found at Wordpress.com is the fact that you can back up all of your entries into a file which can be used to import them into another Wordpress. I like being able to make quick and easy backups.

Well, with the new Blogger launched, I think many will be switching to it though. I am using Blogger now but have a thought of changing to Wordpress once a while because those sites I came across which were using Wordpress are indeed has a nice yet simple template.

But anyway, I still stand on Blogger's side. icon_biggrin.gif

For free hosting I'd definitely go for Blogger. You can edit your template, which means you can do things like add social bookmarking links automatically to the bottom of your posts. I don't think you can do that with Wordpress.com unless you put the HTML in every post yourself. It's much more convenient with Blogger.
Plus, I like being able to post by email. icon_smile.gif

I've been using blogger for a while now and I just love it ! Keep in mind I was a newbie too, but :

1) Starting with blogger is very easy
2) The HTML is easy to edit etc. and plenty of people use Blogger, which means you'll always find someone who's been through whatever problem.
3) Never had maintenance problem, always been able to access my blog anytime.
4) With Blogger beta, new features are added once in a while.

I wouldn't change it !

This comes up quite a lot and I always say WP 100%. I like how it is user friendly, well organised and easy to use.
There are also loads of templates available for WordPress which you can customize providing you understand CSS, HTML etc. You don't need to customize them, though icon_smile.gif .

I actually read over at OpenSwitch today about how good TextPattern was, which may be worth a go. I haven't used it myself, but go and take a look. It is quite interesting.

Just out of interest, what are you currently using?

Self-hosted Wordpress is the best. Wordpress.com is only good if you don't want to customise your template or blog by email. Even self-hosted Wordpress has a lot of trouble with blogging by email. Blogger is great with blogging by email. So which one is best really depends on what features you want.

I've used wordpress on my own server, wordpress.com, and blogger since I started blogging. I'd go with the wordress on your own server for total control. If your HTML skills aren't great, wordpress.com beats blogger -- at least as far as looks go. I think the templates are better. One drawback is that you can't use scripts with the dot com wp, so things like blogrolling are out of the question.

To be totally honest, for a beginner who doesn't mind paying a monthly fee, I'd go with Typepad. Customizations is a breeze. They have a great WYSIWYG editor, for the HTML challenged.

is it just me? or am I the only geek who thinks wordpress is a lil hard to use? I like creating my own layouts and such ...maybe it's because I haven't had the patience to really think through wordpress.

It took me a while to learn to use Wordpress. Most of it was trial and error, and reading the codex and support forums. I found Blogger really easy to use. The hardest thing to work out was editing the templates, which wasn't too hard to figure out once I worked out how the HTML worked.
