Out of curiosity:
- What do you think of blogs with ads?
- Where would you draw the line in terms of what/how many ads there are?
- (if applicable) Do you use ads on your blog? _________________ --mike

I think ads on a blog can be done well but I rarely see it. A lot of bloggers don't seem to put any thought into how visually distracting the ads they put in are. Text ads with in text posts are the worst.
Maybe I will put ads on my blog one day but I will be very careful. _________________

I don't see anything wrong with an attempt at monetizing your blog by incorporating ads. In theory, that is. In practice, I'd have to agree with Stu -- most people don't know when enough is enough and the result is stimulus overload. Many blogs are thinly veiled attempts at monetization and lack content.
I will try them at some point in the future, but will be minimalist about it! _________________ http://www.thewindowsshopper.blogspot.com |

Yeah. I don't like it when the main content is lost in the ads _________________

Hi
I did have ads on my blog, but decided that they looked unprofessional.
The best blogs I've seen are adless!

| A lot of people seem to talk about how they think a blog loses its credibility when there are ads on a blog or other monetizing things. I personally don't see that at all. I do put ads on my blog, but they don't effect what I post or the opinions I have. I don't look poorly on other blogs that have ads. I say good luck to all of us trying to earn an extra buck with our blogs. Let's help each other out! |

I am an admitted and known supporter of monetizing a blog. Ads are only one way that revenue can be derived from a blog. A blog can also serve as an advertisement in and of itself for the blogger's professional services. The bloggers establishes credibility through the blog posts, and a reputation as an expert in the field. A relationship is built with potential customers and clients over time, often resulting in developing a long term customer. The blog serves as the ad in this case, without ever advertising in the traditional way. Instead of product or service promotion, the blogger is establishing rapport with the readership.
Of course, that is all outside of the realm of this thread and blog advertisement placement.
First of all, start with the conclusion. What are the goals of the blog? If the blog's purpose is to generate a revenue stream, then some sort of monetization is necessary. On the other hand, a blog that is only serving Adsense ads is not a blog at all. It's a spam blog or "splog" as they are called. They are not to be confused with real blogs.
A regular blog, that carries advertising is no less professional than one that is "ad free". In fact, some people might consider the blog without ads as being a weak representative of a supposedly profitable company.
Any blogger, whether they carry ads on their blog or not, must maintain openess, honesty, and full disclosure of any personal gain from any post. If the advertisers dictate the content, or even if carrying an ad prevents the blogger from writing honestly, then there is a problem. Blogs are supposed to be transparent. That is the real issue of blog ads - openess, honesty, and transparency. Without that trust from the readership being established, the blog fails to meet its goals.
In summary, I support blog ads, but expect openess, honesty, and transparency about the effect of the ads on the blogger's editorial policy.

I didn't even know what a blog was until last month when I started my blog. I have added a lot of ads to my site, not because I expect to make any money, but I just enjoy learning how the process works. I enjoy trying different ads, fonts, etc. to see what responses I receive.
By the way, this is my first post to BloggerTalk.

I have adsense on my blog at the moment, but currently no other real ads. I like adsense for me as I find good Scottish sites through it. If I ever make any money off of it it'll be a nice little bonus but is not really of any interest to me. I will eventually replace one of the adsense with banners once the readership is up a bit more but will be limiting it to Scottish sites and won't be charging for displaying them. _________________ Bob! |

| Moderation is key. If I'm on a blog (or any site, for that matter), and I'm more distracted by flashing or talking ads than by the material, it won't keep my attention for long. I like following links, so those hat have ads embedded into their text that makes it appear like something other than advertising, really irritate me. Otherwise, like a few others said, I have no problem with people trying to draw a bit of money in for their efforts. Personally, I don't use them, but it doesn't mean I won't necessarily in the future. |

| I have Google Adsense on mine. I don't think the ads on my site detract from the site itself. They aren't hidden, but I don't think they are in your face either. If you click on one of my adds, it is obvious before hand what you are clicking on. If anyone thinks mine are distracting, I would love to know. I am really more interested in growing readership than in making a few pennies here and there. |
