I so far always used Blogger (Blogspot) however for a second blog I thought of trying Wordpress so that I can meanwhile familiarise myself with a new site. Can someone answer me these questions (probably easy ones but then I never tried Wordpress before):
1) can you make a backup of a Wordpress.com hosted blog? As in: downloading all your entries to your hard drive to store a local copy?
2) do Wordpress blogs ever expire if you didn't make new posts or didn't sign in for X weeks/months? Or do blogs always stay up, even if you don't sign in for a long time (just like Blogspot blogs never expire)?
3) do old posts remain visable and stored just like with Blogger (where on bottom of each page you have a "older posts" option to go to previous entries) or does Wordpress automatically delete older blog entries as soon as there are more recent ones posted?
4) is it correct that you can actually use Wordpress.com like a webhost and make static pages as well on top of the blog, so that you can use it as a webhost as much as you can use it for only blogging?
Thanks for any feedback.

Are you talking about blogs hosted at wordpress.com as there is wordpress the blogging platform used on self hosted blogs and wordpress blogs hosted at wordpress.com?
From my knowledge wordpress.com blogs don’t expire.
You can make static pages on Blogger now too. |

I was talking about wordpress.com-hosted blogs yes.
One more question: I digged somewhat deeper in the FAQ on wordpress.com ; apparently they now allow to send in your blog entries per email as well just like Blogger allows it (the system would be that you type your blog entry in the email field like in Yahoo or Gmail, the title of the email becomes title of the blog entry, and then you just post it to the email address set up to deliver straight to the blog)
One thing I don't get from the FAQ : if you choose to send in an entry per email, how do you add the Category and how do you add the Tags for this entry? Do you have to add those on bottom of the email, somewhere on top, or ... ?? How do you do this correctly to avoid some tags appearing in the middle of your blog entry as if it were supposed to be part of the text?
PS: I didn't know Blogger/Blogspot allowed static pages as well now... That makes it a bit harder to choose where to host the blog, although I guess both Blogger and Wordpress are backed by a wealthy company and thus likely to survive for many more years ... |

OK, someone let me experiment/toy a bit with a test account she created.
Well, I added a category, created some tags, some links, ... All went smoothly, it more or less speaks for itself. Some of the more advanced stuff you may know more about:
- when creating a category or post, there is an option "Excerpts are optional hand-crafted summaries of your content that can be used in your theme" ; what does this mean? On the wordpress.com FAQ I couldn't find any info on exerpts
- when editing a post or writing a new post, there are options "paste from word" and "paste as plain text". Is that like writing the article in MS Word, then only afterwards sign in to Wordpress and then export the Word document into your blog entry? Or does it mean something totally different?
PS often when copy pasting from Word there can be annoying breaks or extra empty lines when you're pasting into any other format than another word document...
- "Blog pages show at most (5) posts
Syndication feeds show the most recent (5) posts"
: is this basically that after 5 most recent posts you have the "show older posts" option taking you to the next page where the 5 previous blog entries are?
(PS my initial question if posts remain online forever or if they get deleted once an X number of newer posts have been published, wasn't answered yet. I would like that posts remain in the blog, so that you can just go to earlier posts via the "Older posts" on bottom of each page and still re-read posts dating from 2 years back )
- Discussion settings (allowing people to post comments with/without registering, with/without approval needed from blog owner, with/without email address from commenting person, ...) speak for themselves except the option to send in entries per email. I checked the FAQ on wordpress.com again and not sure where exactly to enter the tags and categories so that it's published smoothly...
- "Store uploads in this folder" in the Miscallaneous Settings : uploads as in pictures or music files or so? I thought those were shown through hyperlinking from YouTube or so, rather than by uploading them?
