I was recently contacted about having links or photos opening in a new window, this is considered bad manners and in violation of web standards. What are your opinions? I had no idea and will correct this on my blog soon. |

Sherry, there is a bit of a debate on computer forums and in the blogosphere with regards to opening links in a new window. Opening links in a new window is quite a command method and it is not so much a violation as it is bad manners. Many websites still do it, and up to recently I still did it. The new IE comes with tabs as does FireFox. Many users use tabs, so there really is no needs to have links open in a new window to keep visitors at your blog. Let them decide if they want to open a new window.
If you are going to have your links open in a new window inform the user.

I would say that new windows is bad for overall usage.
If you have something in which it is logical to use a new window, be consistent. Always be one way or the other. Switching it will only annoy people. _________________ --mike

Rose and Mikem,
Thanks for responding to this concern of mine. I decided I better remove all target="_blanks from my blogs to be on the safe side. I don't want to annoy anyone. |

Lorelle on WordPress left a comment on my blog thanking me for a link about another post I wrote. Then she also mentioned it was bad manners today and in violation of web standards to have links open in a new window. I finally wrote a post about her comment tonight and thanking her for taking the time to explain this to me.

Well sherrykins you obviously have more patience than me as I'd have told her where to stick her comments about bad web standards. Your site, do as you please. All external links on anything I'm working on open in new window/tab because that's the way I like it and that'll not change anytime soon. _________________ Bob! |

Links opening in a new window annoy me! It's so damn distracting and makes it incredibly hard to keep track of your path because it breaks the back button.
I guess I use the web pretty hard out because I often have about 10 or so tabs open. I prefer to right click on a link and hit the hot key for a new tab. The only time I left click is when I don't want to be on the current site anymore... so forcing me to stay by opening a new window is soooo frustrating
My advice from a user's perspective is not to do it all, even if it seems like a great idea to keep visitors. _________________ NZ Protagonist - My screenwriting blog.

I couldn't agree more! I used to open up new windows constantly, so I could keep track of everything I was doing....when I switched to using firefox, I was in heaven. I could never go back to not having tabs... |

I didn't realize it was thought of as bad either. I open links in new windows most of the time but thinking about it maybe tabs is a better way. _________________

I love Firefox and opening new tabs/windows because I hate losing the original page. _________________ AldianPrakoso.com
