How to move WordPress to different web hosting and upgrade to new version?

I'm currently using WordPress 2.0.5, want to upgrade to WordPress 2.1 and I'm also moving to another web hosting company.

I wonder if it's the correct way to do it?
1. I back-up my WordPress 2.0.5 at the old web hosting company.
2. I installed WordPress 2.1 at the new web hosting company.
3. I import my WordPress 2.0.5 back-up data into WordPress 2.1

Please help.

Wow backup!

Your Old SQL file wont work with 2.1 as its using the WordPress 2.0.5 distro and sql inquires!!!!!

You must upgrade the SQL to be compatable with 2.1!

AldianP, I have done 12 or more WordPress upgrades in the past week alone and then had to do it three times for some clients and twice for each of the other hosting client as they released another one 7 days later!

WordPress 2.0.6 - 1 week later - WordPress 2.0.7 then WordPress 2.1 was released WordPress.org is icon_evil.gif j/k

So trust me I know all about WordPress upgrades!

This is what you must do as I assume you don't have shell access?

Follow this step by step and you’ll be up and running in 20-25 minutes!

Step 1
On the New host upload your old WordPress 2.0.5 files and Import your old MySQL database to the new server!

Be sure to create the mySQL database in phpMyAdmin and then adjust the wp-config.php file to the new username and password set for the mySQL database!

Once you have it up and running, with the old files and configurations download WordPress 2.1

Now extract WordPress 2.1 to a folder on your desktop for easy access!

Next open the WordPress 2.1 file that you extracted earlier and delete the wp-config.php file so you don't overwrite your existing one with your current settings!

Now before you upload WordPress 2.1 make sure your blog is in Working order! No error's or SQL errors!

If there are no problems, login to the WordPress Admin Control Panel and deactivate every plug-in you have installed, this is important! Otherwise the upgrade may fail!

Once the plug-ins are deactivated its time to start the upgrade but we must remove the following files first!

Delete these folders an their content from your web server WordPress 2.0.5 distro

wp-admin
wp-includes

Next open the wp-content folder/ if you see a cache folder delete this as well, as older versions of WordPress used a cache folder and 2.0.7 to 2.1 don't any further!

Now the easy part, upload the new folders and files from the WordPress 2.1!

wp-admin
wp-includes
wp-content

Upload the rest of the files to the root where your wp-config.php file resides!

Once everything is uploaded, you need to type the URL of your blog in your browser but also run the upgrade script as well to update the database to 2.1!

Example
http://www.your_url.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php

That should do it!

If you need further help let me know or I can do this for you, if you run into trouble!

You're right Shawn, I don't have Shell access.

Just want to make sure if I do it correctly:

Do I download all of my WP 2.0.5 files into my laptop then upload them into the new host?

How to import the old mySQL DB? Is it the one generated from the backup file?

Does the new mSQL DB have to be the same name as the old DB?

You mean the old blog WP 2.0.5 in the new host?

I understand these steps above. They're simpler than the previous steps.
Thanks Shawn.

Yes download all the files from your old host, WordPress 2.0.5 to your laptop and reupload them to your New Host.

Now you can create a database with the same name and password if your prefer by looking at the old wp-config.php file!

Inside you will see the name of the database, usernamer, and password associated with your WordPress!

Yes again, you import the OLD mysql file, which is the backup from the old server up to the New web host

Yes again, once the WordPress 2.0.5 is uploaded to the New Server and it is in working order, you de-actaviate all plugins, and delete the folders I mentioned in my above post!

Reason - your going to be replacing them with the WordPress 2.1 distro, and then running the upgrade script!

It sounds like your getting there, let me know if you need further assistance!

Thanks Shawn!
I finish the upgrade to WP 2.1 at the new web host icon_biggrin.gif
Now I'm waiting for the name servers to propagate to its new home.

P.S. My old blog has new comments. How to transfer these comments to the new one?

Hello AldianP icon_biggrin.gif

I am glad it worked out for you - but curious, the comments should of moved over too?

Are you sure you saved the entire mySQL backup?

Go into your New Web Host control panel, then click the mySQL icon and then scroll down and select phpMyAdmin!

Once there select the database you wish to view from the left hand side in the 'drop down menu'.

Once the database has loaded insure this table is present 'wp_comments' and just under each of its categories you should see one called records, see what it says and report back to me.

As there should be something in there if you imported your comments correctly!

Hi Shawn,

Oh yes, the comments are moved too. But the domain name is still pointing to the old name server so I keep getting new comments there.
Is it possible to move these new comments too?

By the way, I'm confused what's the best way to point the domain name to the new web host?
If I change the name servers, I'll lose my other services such as email.

Hello AldianP

Oh I see unfortunately there’s nothing you can do about the comments still being posted on the old server... unless of course you wish to reload the mySQL comments table again, to try and reduce any loss.

Now the unfortunate thing is if you want to have your new domain propagate to complete the transaction you’re going to have to use the name servers of the new HOST in your registrar!

Now you won’t loose email or shouldn't if you use the IP address of the new host, instead of using the mail.yourdomain.com as the POP3/SMTP - use the IP until the site fully propagates

Hope this helps!

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the tip.
I don't think it's worth the risk to reload the comments table. I can live with some missing comments icon_smile.gif

Still waiting for the IP for POP/SMTP from the new host now.
