Does anyone on here participate in blogrolls? Are there any disadvantages to being in them or including them on your site?

Now this is just me, I don't want to sound like a jerk here because I know a lot of people love blogrolls and that's cool. I feel blogrolls scream amature. Like I said I know some people like them and I can understand why, it "can" get you more hits. For me, I don't like just linking to anyone, so I made a whole separate page for my links. And this page only has blogs I read regularly. That's my solution.

Hello Andy, well I know many people who do have blogrolls. I think if you are going to add a blogroll, you shouldn't add it to your sidebar. Keep it mind when the links are on your sidebar those links load on every page and some SEO experts say that it hurts your PR as these are outgoing links to sites that may not be linking back to you. If you are going to add a blogroll add it to a separate page. I personally don't link exchange when it comes to my blog. A few bloggers have added me to their blogroll and I have a couple people on my blogroll. It is totally up to you.

Yea a disadvantage is that it could possibly look like a spam farm to a search engine. The search engines can probably tell the difference I assume, but I'm not an expert.. (Didn't you point out an article about that somewhere here Rose? I remember reading it icon_smile.gif.)

I dont know, blog rolls are probably another great way to build the community around your blog because anyone you link to will feel noticed and special, so hopefully they'll read more of your stuff..?

I really need to add more blogs to my blog roll icon_sad.gif

I never thought about blogrolls affecting PR. I have a blogroll that has gotten a bit stringy lately, even though I broke it into two categories: personal and writer/reader links. I like what I see some bloggers doing: a sideblog with several highlighted posts from other sites.

Kathy you may want to move your blogroll to its own page and limit it like I have done.

I use blogrolls to boost the PR of my clients.

You can look at blogrolls in two ways: As a way to show the search engines how relevant you are to similar sites and as black holes through which your traffic is leaving. If you are trying to make money from your blog then those links will encourage your visitors to go elsewhere. On the other hand, if you work out a reciprocal arrangement from other blogs that cover similar topics then you could get additional traffic from that. If you have a really popular blog that has a lot of traffic then you can sell a link on your blogroll to boost the PR of those advertisers.
