I just today made the connection between the Rose here and the Rose on a couple of other sites I read. Guess I can be a bit dense at times, but she does seem to get around! My question is detailed below and posted here because I noticed that Rose does moderate comments on at least one of her other sites. I have asked the same thing at other times and get mixed answers. What does anyone think? Am I making a mistake by having an open comment policy?
On my site, I have a simple comments policy, allowing anyone to comment without having to register or login.. You can read it by going to will taft . com and clicking on the comments and privacy link on the right sidebar.
I allow anyone who is commenting to link their web site or blog to their name when posting a comment. These inks can be followed.
I know that many blogs have similar open comment policies. I also find many more that have moderation, login or registration requirements. Some blogs do not allow you to link your website or blog to your comment. And some do not allow links of any kind in comments or signatures.
What do you think? I feel that too many restrictions on commenting is a bad thing. Is this because I have a low traffic site and have the time to maintain an open comment policy? Right now, I have many readers, but few commenters. If I had lots of commenters every day, would I soon feel different? _________________ -Will

I have a comment policy and I do moderate comments on my blog. It is always good to moderate comments to avoid spam in your blog comments. Akismet does not catch everything. I too have had a few nasty anonymous comments left on my blog that is one of the reasons I do moderate. I don't make people register or sign in to comment. Turning off the “nofollow” on blog comments has become a sort of movement, but it isn't one that I have joined. I think at some point you may want to change your policy to state that the views expressed are those who comment and not yours. i really don't have any answers for you. I guess whatever works for you. _________________ Help Support Blogger Talk Blogging Community|

Another "comment policy" fan. I've had people leave comments (not spammers, mind you) asking me to "check out my blog." In my opinion, it's kind of tacky. On most comment forms, there's a place to leave an addy, why put it in the text area?
I don't make people sign in or register either, but if I haven't already approved the email address, it goes in a moderation queue. Basically, I don't want to be tethered to my website all day, policing comments 24-7. _________________ done but with errors |

| I was totally open, but the spam was intense. I HATE, HATE the alpha function to have to type in on some sites, because at least 30%, I have to retype. I do moderate the comments, which I think is a limiter. |

I moderate my comments, but I do allow anonymous comments. I run a political site, and I try to operate it free of name calling. Because of that, I want to ensure that no one posts a comment that simply insults me or my readers. I also have had a few post with links that were "questionable". I don't want someone reading my site to click on a link that gets them in trouble, so I moderate that as well.
Other than that, I let everyone else comment. _________________ Andy
