WordPress automatically inserts the nofollow tag in all external links in the comment section. This means that the search engines will not follow the URL’s listed in comments, therefore a commenter will not get the benefit from search engines for commenting on your blog. There is a plugin called ‘DoFollow‘ that you can install. This plugin provides a way to remove the nofollow tags introduced automatically by WordPress.
To disable nofollow, use one of the following two plugins:

Follow Url

I don't get why you'd want to disable the nofollow??? It's just encouraging spammers...
On the DoFollow website he tries to argue someone is going to get more spam by using nofollow  umm? He just goes around in circles about commenting in general and doesn't make any proper points.
Is there any reason to actually turn nofollow off?

No one is making the argument that using no follow will lead to more spam, but the fact is that despite nofollow, comment spam has not only not subsided, but has increased. In other words it has had no effect on comment spam.
What it has had an effect on, though, is the link sharing between community members who comment on each other's blogs. When someone takes the time to post a thoughtful comment on your blog, the least you can do is recognize them by following their comment back to their blog.
The solution to comment spam lies in effective detection and suppression through anti-spam tools like Akismet and Spam Karma.
Putting the follow back in your comments and using an effective detection and suppression tool, rewards your readers who choose to comment on your blog, simple as that, I can't think of any better thing to want to do on a blog if you would like to build a community around it. |

As someone who rewards active commenters with a place on the blogroll, I'm not entirely sold on the "no-follow" plug-ins. Doesn't it encourage not only spammers, but people to leave useless comments knowing they'll get a link back anyway?
