Ok I've just had an interesting idea to increase traffic and indeed credibility of your blog. Now I can't really apply it to my own blog and since my blogging mission is to provide exact details of all my actions with/on my blog, I thought I'd chuck it out into the cyber ether for the rest of you guys to see what you think.
Step 1 - Write a really, REALLY good blog post on some contentious issue that is in the headlines at the moment. Make sure you approach the issue from both sides and leave the conclusion open for debate.
Step 2 - Spend a bit of time to find 4 quite successful bloggers with clear opinions on both sides of this issue (e.g. 2 tories and 2 labour members OR 2 religious bloggers and 2 atheists).
Step 3 - Invite these 4 bloggers (preferably by email if possible) to come and give an expert comment on your post. This will flatter them and they are likely to do it, also if they don't, simply ask another blogger.
Step 4 - Sit back and watch the ensuing debate all being done through the medium of your blog's comments! You can interject from time to time and also mediate the comments to keep the debate relevant.
Step 5 - Heavily promote the post and debate. If you take the key issue from the headlines then many blog posts and news items are likely to spring up that will have high initial traffic; comment on loads and link to your blog and see what happens when the new visitors roll in.
Even if you only get high traffic for the duration of the discussion on this issue, thats still quite a big help but it is possible that you will get a link or two out of this, targeted, one-way links, the good ones! Also a number of bloggers are likely to link to your first article in their own posts on the subject if they have read it.
Step 6 (Optional) - If you really want to push and try and get a link from the 'expert' bloggers you initially contacted then you could critically analyse the debate and blog your conclusion then email these experts to tell them. If they email or post something favourable and still haven't given you a link, well, just ask for it!
What do you guys think? _________________ One man´s meandering e-business investigation;

way too much work and probably wouldn't work out as planned.
I find just SEO the best way ultimately to garner traffic. Social networking and engineering is overrated IMO. _________________ oakland a's blog

Yeah I agree SEO is probably the best, but just think if the article was relevant, it wouldn't hurt to make a little more effort than normal, good content is very important, and a debate like this can only add to your blog's quality and authority in your niche. _________________ One man´s meandering e-business investigation;

SEO is obviously the best way, however you are not to expect immediate results.
Personally I find picking fights a lot easier to link bait. You'll be surprised how fast people react if you provide good reasoning in your arsenal. In one of my blog post, I picked a fight with one of the most well known blogger (Darren Rowe) I got an immediate response within the day.
If you have a good topic that you would like to link bait, I say go for it by all means. Digg it to top and just let the free links flow through.

Honestly I think its a fantastic idea. If I had a nickel for every vague "SEO is the way to go" post - I would never work again!
Controversy always attracts attention - even if someone is opposed to your article. It's the same reason people always stop and watch car accidents. _________________ http://www.jeremie.us |
