Just a quick question to anybody interested. I have recently written three blog posts on traffic that were quite long but before that I had a few posts that were quite short and so I configured my settings to show 3 posts on the front page. Now however 3 posts seems very excessive and results in a lot of blank space in my side-bar at the lower extremities.
So what should be done here? Should I keep changing the amount of posts on the front page or strive to keep to a consistent word count whilst blogging?
Any suggestions? _________________ One man´s meandering e-business investigation;

Hey thanks for the reply Rose. What are expanded posts and how do I use them?
Thanks again! _________________ One man´s meandering e-business investigation;

I think mine has 5 on it right now. It doesn't seem to bother many people, and I continue to get traffic to some of the older post _________________ Andy

Most people reading new blogs for the first time read the most recent post, and if they find it interesting,will scroll down to the next etc. Most however will only look at maybe up to five, depending of course on the length of each post as well as how interested they might be in the post. As a general rule of thumb I would think not more than five posts on the front page---and I wouldn't worry to much about the open space at the bottom----the vast majority of readers never get that far, and in time it will fill up as you add this or that button or widget to your side bar, as your list of archives lengthens etc. etc.

I generally try to make the page balanced so that neither the blog posts nor the sidebar is too long if someone should scroll to the bottom.
I use expanded posts but actually I'm amazed by how many visitors either don't understand the 'Read More' concept or just don't bother to open the rest of the post. And many of them are bloggers, lol. You would think they would be familiar with the concept.
I participate in a theme photo post weekly and get lots of visitors primarily because I comment on their theme entries. One week the theme was perfect for an expanded post presentation which I normally use anyway. The theme was "What IS that?" I thought it made perfect sense to present a photograph that made people wonder what it was and then provide the "Read More" to open the balance of the post to have the mystery revealed.
I could tell by the comments of the first few visitors that many did not open the rest of the post. It was obvious by the remarks and questions in the comments. I had to go back and edit the line before the 'Read More" link to basically tell future visitors to click on read more to display the rest of the post which included information and additional photo's of the mystery object in settings where it was recognizable. Once I added that line the nature of the comments changed dramatically indicating that most of the new visitors were opening the "Read More" to see the rest of the post.
The next week there was a new theme but the same thing happened. I could tell that many of the initial visitors were not opening the rest of the post by their comments. I went back and removed the expanded post option so the whole post would open automatically. Once again the comments by the new visitors changed dramatically indicating they were viewing more of the post.
Lesson learned, lol. From now own I will not use expanded posts for those theme posts.
Now the problem is I sort of like the "Read More" feature for my other posts, but I'm skeptical of how many visitors don't understand it or even realize it is there. I may just abandon it entirely or try another resource that presents the 'Read More" option in a much more prominent way than my current one does. _________________ Baker Watson

one I can I suppose list more post entries on a page using the "read more" methodology---I myself am annonyed with that approach, so few opening lines intrigue me to want to bother to read more-----those pages with a lot of "read more" entries are to much like "Twittering" where everything is done is 25 words or less----to much like kids texting. but then thats MY opinion.

Actually I generally like blogs with expanded posts. It all depends on how it is used and it doesn't exactly fit a lot of posts.
I usually find it much easier to navigate around in the blog, especially if I am returning looking for a particular recent post. I don't have to scroll down maybe the equivalent of 5-10 pages of posts to find it if the blogger posts often. Also, I can quickly skip over a post that doesn't interest me and look at recent posts that might. Sometimes I may be looking for posts on a particular subject and the labels, tags, or post titles may not be sufficient for finding it. I like the idea of being able to look at the intro to the post and decide whether I want to read it or continue on down a shortened page to the next.
If the first part of the blog post doesn't interest me at all then I'm probably not going to continue anyway whether it is a full presentation or a 'read more' presentation. _________________ Baker Watson

Well I would have to agree with you in regards to the ease of searching for a particular post, I have not had much occasion to have to go back to find a particular post---(relatively new to blogging here and don't have that many to look through---and I usually can remember my post titles fairly well (knock on wood). I may give it a try and work with it a bit, who knows I might end up liking it------HEY GIVE IT TO MIKIE!!----

Actually I was referring more to other bloggers who use expanded posts on their blog. In most case I prefer them. Say I want to quickly scan what Rose has posted on her blog recently or go to a post that is a day or two old to review the comments or something like that. (And we both know when she is blogging she can make 2-3 posts a day, no sweat.) I can easily scroll down through 4-6 posts and find it with just one or two rolls of the scroll.
But even for my own blog it makes it easier to go to a post 2-3 days back maybe to check the comments and see if I need to respond to someone.
Having said that, however, I still wonder how many people don't understand the concept of 'Read More" and never open the rest of the post even if they like the beginning. _________________ Baker Watson

I find when needing to get back to a previous post of my own, its easier to just go to the dashborad, click on edit posts and there they all are listed ---click on the one in question and go from there. but as I said before I don't have that many posts to review . _________________ Gary ("Old Dude")
