Many new bloggers get stuck when they decide to start blogging, so maybe we can help them out by sharing what makes a good blog post.

There's no set rule really. But originality is one sure key to making a blog post good - that is, a post that others will want to read and interact with. Even if you're just rehashing some tidbit that you've gotten from another source, you can put a personal opinion spin on it to keep it from being overly repetitive or boring.

I've read theories about post length, with pros & cons on longer versus shorter blog entires, but even long articles can be great posts as long as they're interesting. And then again, there are lots of experienced bloggers who advocate breaking up long posts into a series of shorter posts, which has several distinct advantages, not the least of which that you've got a short, but steady stream of content for a few days or even weeks.

And while it may not necessarily be a requirement for a good post, you'll do wonders for your credibility if you make sure to give due credit for the source of your post topic. (Unless of course the content is totally original.)

I think it depends on the type of blog you have. If it's personal, start out with a post about yourself, perhaps, and what you intend to write about. Length doesn't matter. Some days I have a lot to say. Other days I don't have much to say.

If your blogging to make money, then your entries must be frequent and well thought out. And as Daniel stated, give credit for sources when you use them. No one likes a plagiarist.

This is a great discussion. I was just talking to my friend mabel who' a wise grandmother chicken at the chicken farm where I work about this. She said that to be a successful blog master, one must dig down deep into one's soul and speak the language of the common man. She said that there is nothing more pretentious, self indulgent, and lame then fearing being pretentious, self indulgent, and lame.

Also, hey rodaniel, how did you get that nice little link to your blog under your message?

The link after your messages is a signature and you can add one by going up to the Profile link near the top of the page.

As to what makes a good blog post, it probably varies depending on the type of blog, but some of the common qualities all good posts will possess would be:

Originality / character - if it's just dry content it isn't going to hold people's interest

Well written and well presented - similar to above - the writing style can be a big part of the character, but spelling, grammar and general formatting are also vital. No-one wants to read a massive paragraph of densely packed text.

Breaking it up into shorter blocks, and maybe throwing in a picture or two to break up longer articles, can make it a lot more accessible.

This helps avoid the "TLDR" attitude of many Internet surfers icon_wink.gif

Yes, I've seen alltruism's blog and I know he speaks the truth. He is definitely a blog master. I am currently on the quest to becoming a blog master myself. You can read about the ongoing saga on my blog.
