The truth is, not all directories pass Pagerank. Some directories use methods that deliberately prevent their site from passing PR. You add their link to your blog you get no benefit whatesoever from your link on their site and yet your link benefits them.
BlogCatalog does not pass PR or help your blog’s search engine optimization. If you are looking to get a link that is crawled from them then you are wasting your time.
They use rel="NOFOLLOW" on the links (you have to view code source to see this).
The NOFOLLOW tells the search engine to not follow the link, therefore not recording the link or pass on any PR.
Dirty is what that is! _________________ Help Support Blogger Talk Blogging Community|

I'm guessing there's no way to tweak the source code?

Absolutely! But a good 60% of my readers, and the people I now speak to outside of my site came from there, so the PR is not a huge deal for me. I have a PR of 4, and as you saw from my posts about how they found the site, I am certainly not missing out too much! _________________ http://www.wheelturninghamsterdead.com

Blogcatalog may be beneficial to some bloggers like yourself. There is no denial there and I understand that you don't care about pagerank.
But, people do submit to BlogCatalog like any blog directory to increase their PR. There are many who DO CARE about PR. Google won't count the links on Blog Catalog because they have nofollow in them. Some Bloggers submit to this directory thinking that they are getting PageRank and are receiving no PR at all. People submit because BlogCatalog has a pagerank of seven and are well established.
Last year BlogCatalog was using Java onclick which they argue tooth and nail was passing PR. When it was proven to them that it wasn't they removed the onclick and the nofollow from the links.
Now the nofollow for some strange reason is back. _________________ Help Support Blogger Talk Blogging Community|

Hi all,
First I would like to say it's nice to be here.
And for my first post (not that I want to), I will be playing a little of the deveils advocate.

I do think this is a big leap that 'all, most' submit to such a directory just to gain PR. And further more if they do, they are missed informed as most of these directories don't pass PR much through the 3rd to 5th levels anyhow.
Secondly there is value in posting on this directory for SEO purposes. The directory has been online for four years which gives it good authority and it has 50,000 inbound links which gives it better authority.
PR and following links is only one algorithm which must be remebered. The designers of Google set it up based on of the websites being cited from other resources, similar to research papers.
I am now about to test this theory (I have seen proof before from some of my own sites) based on the above... the more your website is cited across the web even though it may not be linked, the better you will do in rankings.
From http://www.springerlink.com/content/w84q15536062tx71/ you will see on the last line the following...
| Quote: | | Separating out the citing HTML and non-HTML documents showed that formal scholarly communication trends on the Web were mainly influenced by text URL citations from non-HTML documents. |
As it states, mainly influenced by html links but influenced text citation of url's/domains non the less.
The third point is that blogs more than anything else online are about getting into a conversation, if blogcatalog it not a good place to do that I'm not sure what resource is. With that many incoming links and an Alexa score of under 1000 plus the directory it is a great place to find new vistors and customers.
Overall I'm simply saying that good SEO is not just about PR, it's about good marketing online and then optimizing for SEO as well.
A well thought out, well round marketing plan is always the go.
I look forward to comments.
Cheers, Chris. |

Chris, This topic here is that Blogcatalog does not pass Pagerank.
NoFollow links do not pass PageRank.
I have spoken now to two people who paid for sponsor listing in BlogCatalog. They were not informed that their link would be no follow.
It does not matter how many incoming links they have or their Alexa ranking, because Blogcatalog does not pass any value to those listed in their directory.
As far as it being online 4 years. On January 20th, 2007 Blogcatalog was purchased by Tony. BlogCatalog was already well established with 60,000 visits a month, a PageRank of 7 and monthly revenue of $1725 when it was sold. It does not much matter that it has 50,000 inbound links as YOU are not getting anything from the authority it has.
A better question would be what is BlogCatalog saying to it users by using this attribute? That they don't trust any of the links in their directory.
rel=nofollow is a really poor way for BlogCatalog to treat their members who are linking to them. _________________ Help Support Blogger Talk Blogging Community|

I am a member of Blog Catalog Rose, and I am really surprise to learn about this.Well most people link to them to get some benefits in helping their SEO other than getting members there visiting your blog, what is the point for those who upgrade from free to paying members.I think Blog Catalog should be more transparent and inform all their members of this no follow rules. All the members are promoting BC freely with all the buttons and widgets on their blog, but BC is not giving back what they should to all its members..I don't know the exact number of BC members, but if it only benefits about 5% of them, what about the rest, don't they have their rights? Thanks for highlighting this Rose. _________________ http://new-to-blog.blogspot.com
