Hi,
I used to have a blog before but gave it up because of an issue that quite disappointed me: the older posts of a blog should normally, once they disappear from the front page, be accessible by clicking the "older posts" option. But my blog host failed to do this, when clicking the button it displayed a "page not found".
So basically all older posts were lost once they were not on the front page any longer. In the end this disencouraged me from posting new entries, because with every new entry an older one on bottom of the front page just vanished.
However, I decided to give blogging another go. I was recommended blogger.com/blogspot.com by a friend and so far it works really well for me. It was very easy to set up, and I love the option to send in blog entries per email (that way I can post blog entries from any public computer without typing my passwords to access my blog control panel)
Also, with Blogspot no older posts should disappear.
For example this blog of a friend of mine: http://raveandroll.blogspot.com , in the blog archive (on the right hand side of the front page) you can see the blog archive goes back to July 2006.
On bottom of every page there is a "older posts" function so that you just go back as far in time as you wish and can read even the very first posts since the blog existed.
I would also want my blog to not lose any messages. I want my older posts to still be readable (through the "older posts" button), so that people within a year be able to read the entries that I am typing right now.
Now here comes my question: does Blogger/Blogspot automatically store all posts you ever make, making them accessible through "older posts" buttons? Or do you have to somehow program your blog so that your older posts remain online and don't disappear once a newer entry pushes them off the front page?
When I created the blog I did not go to the Archives tab of the control panel. I am not very technically-minded so I rather don't play around too much in the control panel.
Basically I just want my older posts to still be accessible within 1 or 2 years, that by following the "older posts" buttons you can go from page to page and read all posts that were made since the blog was started. Is this automatically the case, or do I have to change settings to make this happen?

But when you post many blog entries and the bottom ones are no longer on the front page because of a new blog appearing, do the older posts automatically move to a next page that you easily reach by clicking "Older posts" ?
Or do you have to make specific settings in your control panel in order to have this done?
Look at that raveandroll.blogspot.com: on bottom of the page there is "Older Posts" and if you click it you go to the next pages with older posts. On the bottom of that page there is another "Older Posts" that goes to page 3 with older posts, and so on until the very first entry ever...
This is how I also want to have my blog. That older posts are just readable by clicking "Older posts" on bottom of every page, so that visitors of my blog can move from page to page and read all entries I ever posted.
Does this happen automatically, or do you need to change some settings in the Archiving tag of your control panel?
I don't want that the posts are gone once they are no longer on the front page because of news posts appearing. |

That's automatic, hun. What your old host did was ridiculous....that shouldn't happen, in my opinion. Blogger and Wordpress both store your archives and nothing special has to be done at all.
You 'can' alter and customize it, though, if you'd like. If you go into your Dashboard/Settings, you can decide how many posts show on the front page (you can pick one week, for example, or maybe you want 10 most recent posts to always be there). You can choose to show an archive section in your side bar....so viewer can click through to see last month's posts or last year's. You can also label your posts into certain categories and have those shown....like all of your posts about horses or pickles, regardless of when they were written.
But put simply, no, you don't have to manually set it to show the "Older posts" and no, your archives won't be deleted unless 'you' want them to be.
Glad you came back to blogging...it's a shame your old blog's host was just so messed up. |

What is the Archiving tab in the control panel for then? You can, I believe, set "Archive Frequency" and "Post Pages (yes or no)". That is what I was told though, I did not touch the Archiving tab in my own blog when I set it up. What are those options for then?
So basically i can just post as many blog entries as I want without worrying, the older ones (on bottom on the front page, pushed off the frontpage when a new entry is made) automatically go to the next page with "Older posts" automatically there to connect the pages?
That is a relief if that is true  I wouldn't like the same thing happening as with the previous blog host. |

What I want is that the older posts that are not on the front page anymore, are just readable by clicking "older posts" and thus allowing to go from page to page until the very oldest posts.
Do I need to set that archive frequency, or does the thing I want happen automatically without having to make any settings myself?
I once read this on a webpage (not sure anymore where):
All the posts you make are stored in a database. This is true whether you utilize archives in your blog or not. If you don't make use of archives, then, in essence, whatever you write that does not appear on the screen is gone for good. It is still in the database, but not viewable.
Archives are a way to store what is no longer on the scrollable screen in an area that your users can find. This can be done through searching at your site or clicking on a date period. More importantly, the information is available in a logical order that can be spidered and indexed by the search engines. So, your blog about the debut of "Titanic" from five years ago still lives in a Google database somewhere!
That part in bold is what I want to avoid of course.
Jessi's blog is also a perfect example of what I wish to have: on bottom of each page there is an "older posts" option and you just go from page to page until the earliest post.
So you guys are sure this happens automatically without having to make any settings (unlike what the quoted text suggests) ? |

| In addition to the question in the previous post in this topic: does Blogger in fact have an expiry policy where blogs are deleted when there is no post for for example 3 months or so? (note: I never log in to my blog and send all entries per email, but that should not count as inactivity I guess as long as new posts appear?) |

I have archived posts, but I don't have an arrow or an 'older posts' link at the bottom of my blog pages. How do I install that?
