| I am relatively new to blogging and do it strictly on a personal basis. You know the kind, pictures of the kids, family vacations, keep in touch with the relatives in far away places. It was recently brought to my attention that this is probably a very bad idea in light of all the personal information that is out there for the taking. Is there a way for me to continue blogging and make my site secure? There must be a way to password protect it or something like that. Any ideas? |

Hi and welcome,
Are you trying to keep the family safe or the computer safe?
1. Avoid last names if possible, the family knows who you are
2. Generalize about your location
3. Don't provide specifics on future events
4. Subscribe to CopyScape to make sure the content does not show up in a place you would prefer it didn't.
5. Make sure it's ok with people before you put their pics online.
As far as computer:
1. Good antivirus
2. Good Antispyware
3. Good Firewall
Nod32 Smart Security takes care of all 3 and is affordable..$59 yr U.S.
Hope that helps

Eric offered some good advice.
I don't post my children's pictures on the internet. A photo can be easily altered in a program such a Jasc Paint Shop or Adobe. These pictures then get exchange between pornographic rings. There is a discussion on the Flickr boards regarding the danger of posting photos of children online.
Password protected galleries is an alternative to placing pictures on your blog.
You can set your blog to invited users only. _________________ Help Support Blogger Talk Blogging Community|

Well for all this apparent discussion of the wisdom of displaying children's photos, I see them in abundance whenever I browse blogs.
I would definitely go with Eric's advice, though.
Also, if you know how to manipulate Photo Shop OR Paint Shop Pro, you can always add a watermark to your photos. _________________ Complex Femme

Good tip there to password protect your photo album should you have personal photo's online.
I try to hide or block faces when posting on the internet, even adults. It's a sad world, but what can we do? _________________ Wildlife, landscapes, seascapes and Irish Life Paintings by Avril Brand

In our case like in our family, we created a group via multiply.com wherein we can share our photos, blogs, stories. The group is "invitational" and only family members can view it.
For my protection, I don't usually tackle my personal stories on public blog. _________________ Ralph Lauren Clothes at Designer Clothing Online for Men and Women |
