Hi,
Well I am new to this blogging stuff. I have noticed some blogs don't have a 'www' as part of their address, and some do. Why is this?
My blog doesn't have a 'www' so how do I get connected to the web? I did submit my current blog address to various search engines.....
Are 'www's necessary for blogs? Thanks. I'm just totally confused. Bet you couldn't tell eh?

The www for any address on the web is *typically* unneeded. Some websites will require the address for certain things to work right, and others will simply not work - it varies by site.
www is just an optional subdomain for a site. For example (on most sites)
site.com = www.site.com
sub.site.com = www.sub.site.com
Does that make sense?

From what I've read it is simply a sub-domain that points to the main part of your site although it can (if you know your stuff when it comes to working with domain names) be directed to a completely seperate section as with other sub-domains. I've never seen this on a live site anywhere on the net in the 10 or so years I've been browsing so don't actually know if it's true.

A sub-domain is a domain that is part of a larger domain name.
For example, in the domain name rosedesrochers.todays-woman.net, "Rosedesrochers" is a subdomain of the larger domain "todays-woman.net."
Wikipedia states
WWW prefix in Web addresses
"WWW" is commonly found at the beginning of Web addresses because many organizations in the past followed a convention of naming hosts (servers) according to the services they provide. So for example, the host name for a Web server was often "www"; for an FTP server, "ftp"; and for a news server, "news" or "nntp" (after the news protocol NNTP). These host names then appeared as DNS subdomain names, as in "www.example.com"."
"This use of host or subdomain names and therefore such prefixes are not required by any technical standard; indeed, the first Web server was at "info.cern.ch"[citation needed] and even today many Web sites are available without a "www" prefix. The "www" prefix has no meaning in the way the main website is shown; locally or around the world. The "www" prefix is simply one choice for a Web site's subdomain name."

| WWW is not needed, if you remove it, it will actually help with SEO to find out how to get rid of it just google "no www" and if you have wordpress there is a plugin that does it all for you! |

Just how does removing the www help with search engine optimization?
Google sees the following urls as different webpages.
www.bloggertalk.net and bloggertalk.net
If someone links to your page with the www and others link to you without the www, you could be splitting the number of inbound links to your blog, therefore splitting your PageRank.
If you have access to your .htaccess file you can redirect to a single url by manipulating the .htaccess.

It doesn't matter really about the WWW.
Both the WWW and the site URL will obtain a good Google PR in most cases, however the WWW site prefix will receive a higher PR then without...
Example
http://www.invision-graphics.com has a Google page rank of 6/10
Where
http://invision-graphics.com has a Google page rank of 5/10
This also goes for our other domains...
http://www.todays-woman.net has a Google page rank of 6/10
Where
http://todays-woman.net has a Google page rank of 5/10
So you see using the WWW has a higher page rank then not using the WWW suffix..
Google, MSN and Yahoo both warrant a higher pr with the WWW.
SEO companies and many articles refer to this as SEO leaking, that’s why they recommend using the WWW prefix.
Its still a matter of personal preference, but of course to prevent this you can use an htaccess file and upload it to the root of your server to prevent SEO leaking

By redirecting visitors to the WWW you prevent sharing or dividing your page rank ..
Plus using the 301 redirect will prevent being penalized by GOOGLE  and insure your page rank doesn't fall.

| Hmmm. The last post was interesting. So does that mean, for example, when using my blog address to comment on other people's blogs, I should use www.quirkyjessi.blogspot.com instead of the standard quirkyjessi.blogspot.com that shows up in the address bar? I doubt it makes much difference for my particular blog, but it just got me thinking about some of the other places I visit.... |

I think the 'www' is also helpful in the real world 
I mean it allows you to immediately realize it's a website addressif there's the 'www' at the start instead of having to read through to the .com. It's way easier to tell what it is on a billboard or ad.
