My daughter, who just got her Master's Degree (proud Dad) has decided that we should set up a blog for her so we can stay in touch with each other's postings.
But after seeing a report on ABC regarding the kinds of problems associated with blogging for females regarding harassment, and worse, we have decided that perhaps we need to make sure that the blog is not "harassment friendly."
I don't like the idea of not having pictures of her, etc. on a blog just because some nut ball may decide to hijack the blog and cause problems.
I decided not putting meta tags in the html document is a good way to start. Since it's a family type blog, we saw no need to technorati or do anything else that draws attention to the site
Does anyone here have an opinion about this, or am I over-reacting to a potential danger? _________________ Visit http://georgejazz.blogspot.com

First of all, I think it's a great idea. While I was working at a camp last summer, I had very limited net and phone access (was lucky to have one or the other once a week and for about 15 minutes max). Having a blog was an easy way for me to keep my family 'and' friends updated about how I was doing without having to choose whether to call my mom or my best friend, etc.. I could also share pictures before I ever came home, so it was great. I didn't even have that many outside hits (and when I did, it was mainly because I talked about the *naked* cowboy in NYC, lol).
I wouldn't suggest worrying 'too' much, because there are tons of female bloggers out there that don't have any problems.....just like how not every myspace user goes to meet someone and ends up in trouble. We only hear about the horror cases. It sounds like you're on the right track to limiting things just enough, though. Is she wanting this to be completely public and bring in a huge readership.....or is it intended to be mainly a personal blog for friends and family? If it's the latter, you might want to consider using a place like Xanga or LiveJournal.....they're smaller and don't have the hype that blogger and wordpress do, so they're not automatically out there quite as much. Otherwise, just make sure she uses common internet usage sense and doesn't put her address, phone number, etc out there.
Oh and congrats on being the proud father of a graduate. |

Sounds like a good idea ! I also started blogging to keep in touch with my family back in France.
Being a female blogger, I can tell you I've never had any problem. Have fun with the blog but don't be afraid : there're so many blogs now, very few people have problems.
If it's a family blog, you could also consider setting the blog to "private" and just invite the people you want to see the blog (they would get a password etc.). I've done that for my web photo albums.
Good luck ! |
