I’ve been tossing around the idea of offering some of my services in the graphic arts area. I do mostly fliers and stuff like that but I also can do stuff for blogs (ex. headers, logos). Now here’s my dilemma, should I make these for free download or should I put a price on them? Ooh, or should I offer some free downloads, and then also offer custom jobs for a fee? Like I said I am just throwing around these ideas, let me know what you think. _________________ BANNED |

Hello Shadeofgray
Why not? Sounds like a good plan to me, however I would go with your second recommendation as you can attract visitors by using what's called Link ware...
Link ware is free graphics that users can use freely but have to link back to you, thus increasing traffic and revenue!
Then take your best graphics and offer them for a small fee…building clientele
I have done this same thing on my Web Design Firm Site ( http://www.invision-graphics.com ) now we include our custom software, scripts, templates, icons, headers, graphics etc…
It has worked out very well for us, I know offer all premium members a subscription program I started. Users pay $10.00 for 6 months or $15.00 for one year, which gives them access to our download section. Today we have almost 600+ subscribers with new clients joining daily!
Good luck Shadeofgray, it's a bit of work to get it started but done effectively you can end up making a bit of income to pay either your hosting or for the time spent!

Funny you should mention that since I'm always doing graphics. A simple rule of thumb is "time is money". Maybe just think in terms of the amount of time it took to complete one of your projects to determine a price for your services.
You need to have some samples I would submit, for potential clinets to see your work.
I just finished a new header for my satire blog that I am really happy with.
I would have chared a $100.00 for it had I done it for someone else. Included were image searching, font development and overall scheme of the page. If the header is also intended to convey the essence of the site, you should charge for creative services as well, just like an ad agency. _________________ Visit http://georgejazz.blogspot.com

Yeah I've been in contact with quite a few graphic designers and all of them said to charge in the $100 range for two reasons, 1. I am just starting out, 2. it's not too low to sell myself short, and still lower than 90% of the designers out there so they will be getting a great deal still. _________________ BANNED |
