Hi,

As I am new to blogging I was wondering what the "essentials" to blogging are. I'm not just referring to a basic list of plugins, but all the aspects of blogging.

I've seen things like mybloglog. Is it a good idea to sign up to this? what are the benefits? + Should I sign up to technorati? +What is gravatars? Should I sign up to that too?

Thanks icon_smile.gif

I signed up for mybloglog but I have not really used it since to be honest. I know some people have found my site through it though.

I've found technorati invaluable for seeing who is linking to my blog as well as allowing more people to find it. I really recommend signing up for it.

A Gravatar is an image of your choosing that is associated with your email address. This means when ever you leave a comment on some else’s blog your image is displayed with it. It's good for getting noticed in the blogging world as you visit other blogs. I recommend it as well.

Making a sig image for using in forums (like mine below) is also helpful in getting noticed.

You should set your blog up with an RSS feed as well that other people can subscribe to. You can do that with feedburner: http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/home

A state counter is useful too. I use SiteMeter and Extreme Tracking but there are a few out there. You might want to have a look around and see which one suits you.

Hope this helps.

Matt that is a very good question.

Claim your blog with Technorati.

While submitting your blog to Mybloglog is not essential, if you are looking to promote your blog I recommend submitting to Mybloglog.

Pingoat.com - Ping your blog after an update.

websitegrader.com- Shows your PageRank, meta info, domain info, technoratic stats, etc

Google Alerts - Copyright infringement is a major problem for bloggers. Track possible violations through Google Blog Search and through Google Alerts.

Test Everything - A nice collection of 128 test tools.

Make sure you have an about me section on your blog.

Make it easy for readers to submit your blog entries to various community/bookmarking sites.

Keep your blog updated, whenever you have time.

Track the visitors of your blog. Make sure that you have installed a counter. I use Google Analytics, Stats Counter and my server stats to learn where visitors are coming from.

Make sure to include contact details.

Make sure to use the ALT and TITLE attributes for images.

Wow, thanks for all the info!

I'm not sure whether to get a unique blog template before I make a "sig image" for it. As I think ti would be ebst to keep them both as a similar theme.

+I'm mainly using technorati at the moment. My "authority" went up to 4 today from 0! lol.

Create an account with feedburner, they really have some great features and it's free.

Websitegrader is a great tool. I agree with that.
