Recently I helped someone get content removed from a blog. The blogger who took the content said he had no idea that he was violating copyright as he was just using his blog as a way to store things. Lorelle VanFossen has written an informative article on avoiding copyright infringements.

I don't think anything I say on my blog is worth violating copyrights over. LOL But as a writer and degree holder, I know all about giving credit where it's due. Most of the time I will grab the link directly to the post I'm referring to and link to it on my own blog. If I use news stuff from Yahoo, I leave all the information about author and such on the copied and pasted stuff and I say it's from Yahoo.

Is it still a violation if you link to the source?

How is it a violation if you're linking the source and therefore showing it's not your work?

Citing the source is not the same as not the same as obtaining permission.
You must obtain permission before posting an article in its full entirety. Reprinting someone else’s post on your blog without their permission is a violation of copyright.

Under the Fair Use doctrine, I'm sure a lot of this could and would be overlooked as a violation of any copyright laws.

If you were to publish an author’s article in its full entirety without seeking permission from that author you would be violating their copyright even if you credited the author and provided a link to the source of the article. That is not and would not be considered Fair Use.

Quoting two lines from the news article with a link to the entire article would be considered fair use.
