Introduction

Blogging is an increasingly-popular Internet activity; indeed, estimates in 2006 claimed that something of the order of 175,000 new blogs were created every day – one every half a second. There is a correspondingly wide range of sophistication and features between the major blogging platforms out there; some features come at a cost, either financial or in terms of complexity. As such, a new writer wishing to begin a new blog is faced with a difficult choice as to what their blogging platform should be. Ideally, the choice of platform should not impact the writing, but that is not often the case. Indeed, the complexity and difficulty to maintain the new creation is one of the main reasons why the vast majority of blogs out there soon become inactive after they are initially created. If it is difficult to add a new post or edit an existing one, typically the blogger loses interest very early. (more…)

While blogging can be a lucrative means to earn money for some, for many of us, it is an inexpensive and hopefully absorbing hobby. While experienced bloggers may wish to invest in some professional hosting, for many of us, getting started with a free site is sufficient. Indeed, there are many writers out there who suggest that paid hosting is not even necessary for your blog to be a success.

A simple thought experiment might confirm this for you. For a moment, it is important not to think as a blogger, or a host, but as a typical internet user; a typical blog reader – in particular, the sort of reader you are looking for to visit your blog. Suppose, for example, you are thinking of starting a blog all about classic cars. A classic car enthusiast turns on their computer, and perhaps goes to Google and types in a few search words. In the search results, there are likely to be many, many blogs; after clicking on a few links, our visitor will read some of them, and, if suitably impressed, will perhaps subscribe to them, bookmark them, or leave a comment. At no point did the blog visitor use whether you had a professional-looking “dot com” URL or whether you were using the latest WordPress plugins as a factor to choose your site over any other. All they were interested in was whether your blog delivered the content they were interested in. There are successful, free sites out there. Can you possibly make a success on any platform? (more…)

Being a subset of journalism, it is no surprise that blogging shares many traits with its parent. In particular, blogging strongly resembles the feature or editorials pages of many newspapers. Not beholden to quite the same rules of timeliness or AP style guidelines as the news sections, these sections focus on matters of personal interest to the writer, or on a specific topic of particular relevance or human interest.

So, given that blogging tends to be derived from these sections, it is reasonable to look into the tactics that bring traditional journalists such success in their writing and to borrow the best ideas from them. In particular, many bloggers have discovered the value of including interviews in their publications.

An interview is fairly straightforward: a conversation between the blogger and another party, generally about a topic of mutual interest to the blogger, the subject and the readers. Some interviews are scripted, some are more extemporaneous, but at their heart they all have the mission of illuminating the thoughts of the interviewee to the audience of the publication in order to shed some extra light on the subject being discussed.

In the world of blogging, there are generally three approaches to integrating an interview into a blog. (more…)

Writing SEO-friendly blogs is not only a necessary study for bloggers, it is also a lot of fun. Beyond concentrating on keywords and trying to get a specific density of those words on your page, writing in an SEO-friendly way helps you to stay focused on your topic. If you do it correctly, rather than writing a blog that reads like a bad attempt to use the same phrases over and over, you will end up with an entertaining, useful entry that will keep people interested and that the search engines will recognize as a legitimate resource that deserves indexing.
